The world is full of various musical instruments. Some of these instruments are indigenous to a country or have a long history of being played in that country.

In Japan, those traditional instruments are called “Wagakki. Examples include wadaiko, koto, shakuhachi, and shamisen. In this article, we will take a small peek into the long history of wagakki instruments.

It is said that the oldest Japanese musical instrument is the koto. The koto is mentioned in Japan’s oldest book, the Kojiki, and appears in mythology. In the Heian period (794-1185), Gagaku, court music combining music and dance, was born. In the Kamakura period (1185-1333), “biwa-houshi” (biwa-playing priests) became popular and told stories using a “biwa” (biwa). Noh” (a kind of Japanese musical) was also created around the Muromachi period (1333-1573). During the Edo period, “joruri” (a type of narrative set to music) and other forms of storytelling became popular among the general populace. Today, Japanese instruments are still an important part of Japanese culture and are used in a variety of musical performances.

Japanese instruments have been an integral part of the development of Japanese culture. In other words, to come into contact with Japanese instruments is to come into contact with Japan.
